ASQA gives accreditation to courses that may be delivered by registered training organisations (RTOs). Accreditation with ASQA ensures that courses are nationally recognised and meet an established industry, enterprise, educational, legislative or community needs.

To register for an accredited course it needs to be assessed by ASQA as compliant with the Standards for VET Accredited Courses 2021 and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Accreditation is formal confirmation that the course:

  • is nationally recognised and meets quality assurance requirements
  • meets an established industry, enterprise, educational, legislative or community need
  • provides appropriate competency outcomes and a satisfactory basis for assessment
  • is aligned appropriately to the AQF where it leads to a VET qualification.

Once registered your course will receive a national code and appears on the national register, training.gov.au. When registering for an accredited course you can attain the copyright of the course as an Individual or as an organisation. training.gov.au publishes the contact details for all course owners under the details of the course.

ASQA can accredit a VET course for all qualification types recognised under the AQF that are eligible for delivery within the VET sector, including:

  • Certificate I
  • Certificate II
  • Certificate III
  • Certificate IV
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Graduate Certificate
  • Graduate Diploma.

Find out more about AQF qualification types and levels

Accredited courses can only be delivered by registered training organisations (RTOs) that:

  • own the course or have permission from the course owner to deliver the accredited course
  • have the accredited course on their VET scope of registration.

What steps do you take to get a course accredited?

  1. Determine there is a need for the course – conduct market research and industry consultation (if you are already running non-accredited training, this can serve as and support your industry consultation and research)
  2. Design the course concept and complete the Aqsa course concept application

  3. If ASQA approves your course you’ll be given 6 months to develop it and submit it to ASQA. The development process will involve you consulting with the industry and documenting this process to ensure you can demonstrate to ASQA that your proposed course meets industry needs.

  4. Once submitted ASQA will review your course and likely provide you with feedback on the things you need to tighten up, adjust or change (rectifications). It is highly unlikely you will nail your first submission, remember your human!

  5. Fingers crossed ASQA approved your amendments and you’re approved! either way, they will issue you with a decision

  6. Once approved you can start to formalise your training and assessment resources, advertise and start delivering to students (this is the fun part)!
